Year in Review: The Friday Five

Posted on Dec 18th, 2008 by Gaia Team : Gaia Team Gaia Team
Hello Lovely Gaians!

Jessica here :)

Wow. It's amazing to think that it's almost 2009! This year sped by, full of excitement, ups, downs and change. The world has gone through a lot in such a small window of time. And, the world, that BIG Gaia, is made up of individuals, each with our own stories to share.

This week I invite you all to explore your experiences of 2008. If you're like me, it might be hard to remember everything, so just write down what pops into your head, those are often the things that have made a big impact, and of course, even the small things can be quite meaningful.

So, here are the Friday Five of 2008. As a reminder, just cut and paste the questions in your blog and add your answers! Don't forget to tag them with Friday Five. Then, invite your Gaia friends to read yours and post their own! (I always pick five Gaians - since it's the Friday Five - tag them on my blog and send them an invitation ;)

We'd love you to share...

     1) What new experience(s) did you have in 2008?

     2) What inspired you in 2008?

     3) What challenged you this year?

     4) What new person or people entered your life?

     5) Which global event(s) had a strong impact on you?

And, as always, here's mine :)

I hope you are all somewhere warm and cozy this week, getting ready for the holidays and enjoying life, with all its dynamic wonder. Thank you for being a beautiful part of my 2008!

Hmmm… 1-I listened to new music, became more open-minded about other peoples’ opinions, and learned many new things about myself.

2-i had a dream in June this year about really really being myself and not being embarrasssed about my quirks (and I have a lot of them… believe me.)

3-this year, the challengee was and still is getting and staying focused for college so I can live a life on a decent income.

4-you guys.

5-Obama’s presidential victory. I thinkk that it will have a very positive impact on us.. He is a very driven man who has strong values and he is not afraid to stand up for what’s right. Whoever doen’t agree, I’m sorry. Buthat is what I think.

Mine are done! And yes, what Matt said… they did make me feel so pensive and make me wonder where we’ll each be 12 months from now. I’m so excited to find out. :)

1) turning 18, which brought on a whole new sense of independence. i love it!

2) the support that came from my parents. they never stopped beliving in me, even when i doubted myself :]

3) school, definitley. applying to colleges and SATs and AP classes. and theres still six more months of it :[

4) a lot of people actually. my senior year so far has been so much fun,[when im not stressing about school], and my entire class of 300 some kids seems to be closer than ever :]

Great questions, Jessica!  Great way to memorialize this last day of 2008…sitting in a favorite coffee shop.  Just completed the GAIA scholarship- and feeling inspired.

SO- in response to #1, new experience?- I moved into the shadiest most urban little apartment ever this year :)- ha!  To save money for grad school.

# 2? Hmmm…probably most inspired by my own decision to risk and to trust myself more and just go for the things that matter to me

#3- challenges!  Urgh!  Alot challenged me but I think the biggest challenge was to keep at the work for which I moved to Denver to pursue.

#4- new person or people?  I moved to Denver in January so I’ve met alot of new people but the few that stand out are aspiring and inspirational people at DU and in random coffee shops that I’ve met.

#5- WHICH global event?  Oh wow- uh…I tend to only be deeply affected when the events are massive and Middle East-oriented so probably the most recent incursion into Gaza.

1- new experiences… tiny college in rural vermont, after living in Brooklyn all my life… and intense mushroom trip in which i seemed to contemplate everything…
2- i was inspired by new found power, the understanding that life is what you make it, and you can manifest your dreams
3- challenges… writing research papers for african politics. I get so much satisfaction out of writing these papers, I learn so much, but really have trouble fleshing them out. not something i had practice with in high school.
4- haha, new people? everyone at my little college. it’s a great community. i can’t imagine being happier at any other school at this point in my life. after feeling like i didn’t fit in at all in my overcrowded brooklyn public school, i feel like a village is raising me. we’re all friendly, and we’re all there for each other, like a big family. i’ve gotten especially close with a few people, but for the first time have a support system.
5- the presidential election def effected me. i made a documentary, ”A Barackumentary”, about the way it played out at my college. i figured obama was full of shit and wouldn’t win, and was surprisingly very happy when he won. and my campus was totally celebratory, a great 1st yr of college experience that i was able to document.
otherwise, diluted news of all the wars in the world effected me as well, in a more, ‘damn, i’m so privileged’ kinda way.

happy new earth revolution!
