I'm so excited! It's finally here.
Every year I look forward to announcing a particular community event. It's a call to action, inspiring all of us to reach out to fellow Gaia members and Gather together in person. Bringing people together is my passion. So, it is with immense joy that I annouce:
August 9th as our official Global Gathering Day. We’re so passionate about you connecting with extraordinary Gaia people that we’re declaring that August is Gaia Gathering month. This means you can host and plan an event any time in August and you’ll still be tapping into the gorgeous Global Gaia Gathering energy and momentum! It is an opportunity for Gaia members to come together all over the world at the same time.
As you might know, Gaia Gatherings (formerly and sometimes referred to as Zaanghas) can be incredibly simple. It’s about doing what works for you. A Gathering happens whenever two or more Gaia members are together. It can be as easy as searching the site for members near you and inviting someone to a café! We’ve had people meet for coffee, volunteer together, attend already existing events, share dinner, watch meteor showers and more. It can be anywhere from 2 to 200 people. It's up to you :)
We believe these conversations and interactions have the potential to catalyze change. They nurture a deep sense of community locally and globally. Magic happens when Gaia members meet, people have created projects together, fallen in love, found deeply satisfying friendships and learned about the world and themselves in unexpected ways. When you choose to host a Gathering, you're facilitating this magic.
How to begin? Well, here’s a set of tips to help you use the site to invite and plan your event. And, of course, I am available for personal host coaching/ encouragement. Just send me a note at Jessica (at) gaia (dot) com. I’m even available on the phone, offering as much support as possible to all of you exceptional organizers out there.
In the past we’ve had Gatherings in over 20 cities from Singapore to Serbia to New York City and has always been amazed at how strong the connections are, just read this, and this. We already have several Gatherings in the works:

We're less than two weeks away from our 3rd Annual Gaia Feel Good Huntington Beach party! I am looking forward to meeting everyone and enjoying a fantastic day at the beach with old and new Gaia friends. Fit and trim Beach Barbie and Ken bodies are NOT required!!!!!! This is a family-friendly laid back beach where the beachgoers come in all ages, sizes, colors and nationalities. Bring your boogie board and some sunblock and let's PARTY!!!!!!

Dear Avaaz volunteers,
We are emailing you because we're preparing an exciting campaign for the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics and looking for people from around the world to help us bring it to life. The basic task is very simple - we're asking you to take a digital photo of yourself shaking hands with a friend or loved one, and email it to us at handshake@avaaz.org. If you don't have a digital camera, don't worry - there will be another opportunity to get involved!
We want this to be as colourful and varied as possible to help represent the diversity and global nature of the Avaaz community. Try to represent your part of the world in your photo, whether through a scenic background or landmark, through traditional clothing, shaking hands with friends of different backgrounds, or anything else you can think of. If you can organise 5, 10 or even 20 people to get together and make a video or photo of all of you shaking hands in a line, even better! (But a high-quality photo will be better than a fuzzy video).
Why are we asking you to do this? Many of our campaigns have a connection to China - from Tibet to climate change, and Burma to Darfur and Zimbabwe. To help deliver our Tibet dialogue campaign, we held a human chain handshake stretching from the Dalai Lama to the Chinese Embassy in London - a powerful, positive event. A similar act, well-aligned with the Avaaz “spirit”, will have a much better impact among Chinese and travel more widely around the world than any anti-Olympics campaign.
So for the Olympics, alongside a challenging advertising campaign on many of the issues we care about entitled “Save the Olympics”, we have decided to organise a global, virtual human chain handshake zig-zagging all the way around the world until it reaches Beijing, in which Chinese citizens can also participate. Its core message will be to bridge the divides between China and the world, sending a message that this is a moment for people-to-people diplomacy, when citizens around the world can come together to urge our governments to do better.
The photos and videos you take will be used to visually represent this global handshake for all the other Avaaz members, so they will play a very important part in bringing the campaign to life. Take a look at our London Handshake video and pictures for inspiration:

I know it's going to be an amazing Gaia Gathering Day and month! To all of you planning and organizing, don't forget to go to the Members Section and choose “location” from the first drop-down and then type in your city and click “Go”. You have to choose “Location” from the drop-down to search by location. Once you get there, invite those good people to your event! It would be a shame for them to miss it!

Am I doing something wrong, or does the second location search field (not the dropdown, but the the one actually marked “location”) not work? I try putting in things like DC and VA to find people close by, but the results don't seem to take that into account.

Hmmm… I see what you mean Steve. I will report that to the dev team. For right now you can just use the drop down and choose “location” from the list and type in your city or state into the blank field to the left of the “Go!” button. We'll work on the other section, probably just a little bug, ignore the “Location” field for now.

I really enjoy connecting with the Gaians I have garnered friendships with in the year and a day I have resided on site.
