Groupy News (Grewpy Nous?)

Posted on Mar 2nd, 2009 by Gaia Team : Gaia Team Gaia Team

Lovely Gaia People!

As you've seen, the work on Groups is nearly done. We've got a new text box, new Room layouts, the ability to add photos and pictures to each Room, previews of discussions on the main pages, and fun little activity widgets (plus the Group Grapevine). We've still got a (very) few open bug tickets, but in general, well... what can I say? I think they're gorgeous. Thank you, dev team, again and again.

If you're someone who's started a Group (months or maybe years ago!) and have thought about rekindling it, now might be an excellent time to do so.

Housecleaning is simple with our new system, so feel free to adjust the chairs, put on a cup of tea, and send a message to your Group members with some news and hightlights. (Just pop into the 'Manage Members' area.)

Also, how often do you browse through some of the new Gaia Groups? Some lovely new ones have taken root recently:

  • There's the beautiful Walking the Labyrinth Group, which features daily practices of self-realization, and is much like a 'living workbook' of inner exploration. (The moderator, HummingBird, also has a group for those dealing with death and dying. If you've lost someone close to you, or are in the process of a loved one dying, you might wish to vsiti Passing...)
  • Marin just started the ingenious Spirit Pen-pals, a networking community for those seeking a penpal with a spiritual connection. I think it's a brilliant idea (I adore writing letters) and it'd be fun to see how the Group grows. If you're passionate about Gaia-like topics, but a little shy about stepping out in a public forum, a penpan might be just the ticket. :) And if you're someone who likes "real" letters, by all means come sign up!
  • Drunk without Wine (he of the everchanging name) created a Group on Vajrayana Buddhism that's been sparkling along nicely. If you practice, or are curious about, this form of Buddhism, pop in and have a look! (He's also helped organize a Group on the Torah, for those of you curious in that direction of dialogue.)
  • Losin' it in Paradise is a new Group for anyone who has something they'd like to deep six. Old baggage? Extra weight? Outdated beliefs? Go abandon them here. :)
  • And, for those of you seeking an easy and welcoming introduction to the Gaia Groups, why not use your age as a guide? If you're under 29, have a look at Gaia Young Adults. And if you're over 50, come celebrate at 50 Stars. :)

If you've got another gem you'd like to share, or invite people to, feel free to post it in the comments. Otherwise, happy exploring. (And do, do go explore. Your fellow Gaia people are truly, truly amazing. :)

Friday Five of Childhood

Posted on Mar 6th, 2009 by Gaia Team : Gaia Team Gaia Team
Hello Wonderful Gaians :)

Jessica here.

I've been thinking about childhood. I certainly had challenges as a child but, there was always playfulness and lots of creativity, magic and imagination. So, this week our Friday Five is all about remembering  what it was like when we were young, how we had fun and kept our hearts light and open :) So cut and paste the questions in your blog and share!

Tell us...

1) What was the name of your childhood pet?

2) What was your favorite toy(s) during childhood?

3) Did you grow up with brothers and sisters?

4) What game(s) did you like to play?

5) Did you have an imaginary friend?

Here's a bit about mine :)

Another update from behind the scenes...

Posted on Mar 6th, 2009 by Gaia Team : Gaia Team Gaia Team

Gaia beings!

It's been another big week for our hardworking developers (again, every time I stop to reflect that the whole structure of this site was the work of their fingers on the keyboards I get a little... well. flabbergasted), so please take a little break from typing, put your palms together in a thank you gesture, and beam a smile of appreciation for Chris and Franc and Ryan and Matthew. This week we've got:

    * Updates to the Media area, including:
          o Our first featured book!
          o Gaia database searched for hits before a larger query is run;
          o Better reviews page--now available for all media.
    * Content builder working better, meaning:
          o Links open in new window;
          o and a better formatting filter.
    *  Room list in groups looking and working better, meaning:
          o Viewing and hiding for conversation snippets;
          o Fixed bugs!
          o Long titles are shortened, with full name in hover-over.
    * Bug fixes for user signup (we love new members too...);
    * Blog fixes to layout and long blog lists should be way-speedier;
    * New Goodies and News newsletter;
    * New Support FAQ;
    * Soulmates links open in new window;
    * Fixes to our search / seek up top;
    * A new Quotes main page, popular quotes now visible, authors moved to new tag cloud (sidebar coming soon);
    * When inviting friends to Groups, we now only show those previous invites if they are not a member but have been a member before and if the Group is private or invite only (phew);
    * Activity and Grapevine improvements; and last but not least,
    * Discussions fixes for sticky note and too-wide pages.

Next up? Gaia e-cards. Just wait. :)

Almost the middle of March...

Posted on Mar 12th, 2009 by Gaia Team : Gaia Team Gaia Team

Lovely denizens of Gaia!

Update time. :) First, here's our glimpse behind the scenes at what's coming out in this next release:

  • Another round of fixes for the text editor, which will should resolve the problems with occasional pasted-font-wonkiness, and should bring everyone's line breaks back into the realm of normalcy;
  • New users are now greeting with a more helpful 'status' message when they first log in;
  • Snippets in Groups now show the thread name when you hover the mouse over them;
  • When we boot a "link spammer," more of that miscreant's content gets erased;
  • The media areas (Books, Films, and Albums) now have a cleaner accordion; and last but not least,
  • We're now asking users to verify their age upon signing up.

And how about other newsJessica has declared March Gaia History Month, so some of us have been splashing about in our archives to find out who our first Gaia (or Zaadz, in some cases!) friend was, or what we wrote in our first blog entry, or what happened to the first Group we cultivated. Time-capsule Gaia!

It's been (for me!) ridiculously fun to go skittering back through the months / years like that, especially because it's given me an excuse to pop a note to those who haven't been back on the site in a while. They'll come back and reply with a "Wow! I need to update my profile... SO MUCH HAS CHANGED SINCE THEN!!" and contributing to that kind of response just makes my day.

And... if you want to be lovelies and help Gaia out, please think about how we might spread the word about Soulmates! If you have single friends who might not be keen on online communities, but who you know have beautiful souls and who would love the spirit and sensibilities of those drawn to our site, by all means send them a link. The site is growing nicely but it's still a wee young thing, and those first new members make all the difference in the world... and your assistance here would be nothing short of wonderful.

Finally, because this blog needs some color, here's Jodi, answering the recent Q&R, "If you were a color, what color would you be?"

(red!)

Questions? Ideas? Concerns? Please phrase them in the form of a wise and insightful comment, and leave them below. ;)

Friday Five of Superstition

Posted on Mar 13th, 2009 by Gaia Team : Gaia Team Gaia Team
Hello Beautiful Gaians,

It's Jessica.

It's Friday the 13th! Ooh! Spooky.

What's more, it's the second Friday the 13th for two months in a row. Some people think this is an unlucky day while others I know say it brings especially good fortune. What do you think? We at Gaia like to look on the bright side and say it's lucky. This week's Friday Five is all about superstition. I don't go in for much, but I do tend to feel a little crazy when the moon is full and throw salt over my shoulder when I spill it ;)

What about you?

1) Do you have a lucky charm? (socks, coins, small rubber chickens?)

2) Have you ever found a four-leaf clover? (and what happened?)

3) Do you throw coins into fountains for wishes?

4) Do you have any quirky or unique superstitions?

5) Have you ever seen a shooting star?
(did you make a wish?)

Here's a bit about me :)

I'd love to hear about you! Just copy and paste the questions into your blog or answer right here in the comments section.

Book Giveaway + "Signs of Gaia"

Posted on Mar 19th, 2009 by Gaia Team : Gaia Team Gaia Team

Hello beautiful people of Gaia!

Today's update isn't about code releases. Instead, it's about books and signs. We'll start with books, just because books are pretty much my favorite things ever, and because the only thing better than reading books is giving them away. :)

I've got three to pass along this week! The first is a copy of our featured book this month—Marc Lesser's Less: Accomplishing More by Doing Less. (Don't you love how his name fits? Too perfect. :) Marc is the CEO of ZBA Associates (ZBA stands for the Zen of Business Association), and his presence and energy shines through his work. If you'd like a little Zen calm in your work-world, or need a reminder that sometimes slowing down can be the best way to move forward, leave a comment (or drop a note) and I'll put you in the drawing for Less. ;)

The second is a book from fellow Gaian Laurent, a long-time follower of the great Indian mystic Meher Baba. After 9/11, Laurent produced a day-long symposium called Eastern Heritage: Beads on One String, where presenters from major world faiths came together to share the essence of their path and to honor the approaches of the others. His new book Celebrating Divine Presence: Journeys into God, is a compilation of these original perspectives, plus a few more. The whole book reminds me of our new One Light, Many Windows Group... perhaps one of the moderators from there might be interested? If so, again, just drop me a note.

Last but not least is John Haines' In Search of Simplicity. I've been friends with John on Gaia for ages but hadn't know his extraordinary life story. I was stunned. The book might as well be a novel, given the vast expanses of the globe (from Nepal to New Zealand) it traverses, and the strange coincidences and synchronicities involved. It's sheer inspiration  for a simpler and much richer life, and hard (if not impossible) to put down.

So which'll it be? Let me know, and this coming Friday I'll alert the winners. Yay!

And now for the signs! Member Yancey is lucky enough to work next to the Gaia Hotel, in Anderson, California, and last week he went ahead and took a photo of himself standing next to the sign.  He was wondering whether other Gaians had any 'Signs of Gaia' to share—and now I'm wondering, too. I've gone ahead and started a thread here (and posted one of my findings!) so if you've seen (or created your self!) a Gaia sign, please come share. :)

With that, I hope you're all anticipating beautiful Fridays and even more glorious weekends (I'm going to be reading, I think...) and best of luck to each of you in the draw...

Update: The comment thread was inadvertently flooding those who had their notifications turned on, so I've closed them for now. If you'd like to enter, just send a note to books@gaia.com and we'll get your name in the drawing. :)

Friday Five of Food!

Posted on Mar 20th, 2009 by Gaia Team : Gaia Team Gaia Team
Hello Lovely People!

This is Jessica :)

Some of you might know that I love to cook. I'm actually a trained vegan chef, although I just do that in my spare time since I'm here working on Gaia. Still, I love sharing food with friends and being creative in the kitchen. I just read that the Obama family is starting an organic garden at the White House so they can have home grown food and they hope to inspire American families to eat healthier :) I think that's cool even though I don't have a garden right now. It's good inspiration.

Food is a beautiful thing. It can be creative, it sustains us and it can make us feel loved if it's made by someone special. It can be simple or complex and it gives us the energy we take in to live our bustling lives.

So, please join me in this week's Friday Five of Food...

1) What did you have for breakfast?

2) Have you grown your own food?

3) What is your favorite beverage?

4) Do you like to cook?

5) What is your favorite vegetable?

As for me...

What about you?
Just comment here or paste the questions in your blog, as always.

Hello Gaia Lovelies!

It's Springtime here in the US! Isn't it lovely? So, this week our Friday Five is about this lovely season of rebirth and newness.

Tell us!

1) What do you like about Springtime?

2) What is your favorite flower(s)?

3) What do you like to do in warm weather?

4) Do you like daylight savings time?

5) Do you like spring cleaning?

Here's what I do...

Time for the drawing... winners below!

Posted on Mar 27th, 2009 by Gaia Team : Gaia Team Gaia Team

Goodness, all. What a flood! I'm so delighted by the enthusiasm; this has been wonderful fun and we'll definitely have another one soon. Again, I love giving things away. :)

So, on that note, let's get on with the drawing! We'll start with John's book.

Siona holds up hat number one, closes her eyes, and reaches inside.

clapclapclapclap

Next up, Marc Lesser's wonderful Less: Accomplishing More by Doing Less

The second (unadorned) hat gets raised high.

And the winner is.... awuso! Congratulations, Chamath. I hope you find it useful. :)

And last, but certainly not least, we have Laurent's Celebrating Divine Presence.

Siona covers her eyes, turns around thee times, reaches in the last hat, and unfolds a slip.

Tom! It's yours.

Congratulations to the three lucky winners, and thank you thank you all for participating. We'll do another soon, I promise.

Tom and Brave Girl and awuso? If you send me your mailing addresses I'll get the books packaged and sent on Monday. (And hopefully you'll both review them on the site and pass them along to someone else when you're done. It wouldn't be fair if I were the only one who got to give. :)

Oh! And one more thing. :) When Laurent saw the list of all those who'd entered for Celebrating Divine Presence, he said his heart ached for those who wouldn't win. So, he's generously offered a discount on the cover price to anyone who put their names in that hat. Just drop him a note for more. :)

Happy Friday, all, and I hope you have wonderful, word-luscious and book-rich, Spring weekends ahead. I will be shoveling. ;)

Snow in Boulder this morning.
